Western National Parks

Conservation retail stores are transforming visitor centers into spaces where shopping directly contributes to protecting public lands. Western National Parks has partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to operate new retail stores at Sabino Canyon Recreation Area and Palisades Visitor Center, offering educational books, locally inspired products and interpretive materials while directing proceeds toward conservation, research, education and visitor services. The nonprofit model connects every purchase to long-term stewardship, allowing visitors to support the places they explore through everyday transactions.

This approach demonstrates how retail can become an active part of destination management rather than simply a source of souvenirs. By aligning merchandise with conservation goals and educational experiences, organizations can strengthen visitor engagement while generating sustainable funding for public lands. As travelers increasingly value purpose-driven experiences, mission-based retail models may encourage stronger community support, deepen brand trust and provide a scalable funding strategy for parks, forests and other protected destinations.
