The UK-based charity Ygam has launched an esports and gaming harm prevention programme aimed at safeguarding young people engaged in gaming and esports activities. This initiative is designed to educate and support not only young gamers but also parents, carers, and industry professionals. The programme addresses a range of topics, including microtransactions, advertising, and career opportunities in esports, with the goal of fostering a safer and more supportive environment. Following a successful pilot at the Sheffield United Community Foundation and Sheffield Hallam University, the programme has been well-received by both staff and participants. Ygam emphasizes the importance of equipping young people with the knowledge and tools to navigate gaming safely, aligning with its broader mission to prevent gaming and gambling-related harm.

The programme includes open sessions scheduled throughout April and May 2025, offering resources and training tailored to various stakeholders. It builds on Ygam's three-year strategy, introduced in 2023, to address the risks associated with gaming and gambling among children and young people. The charity reports that 96% of participants in its initiatives gain a better understanding of how to stay safe while gaming. This effort is part of a growing focus on safeguarding within the esports and gaming sectors, with other organizations, such as Fnatic and Guild Esports, also implementing similar policies. Ygam's approach highlights the evolving need for harm prevention strategies as gaming continues to play a central role in the digital lives of young people.
