Dawit Isaak

To commemorate Banned Books Week 2025, Sweden’s Dawit Isaak Library, in collaboration with BBDO Nordics, unveiled the world’s first double-bound edition of George Orwell’s 1984. This specially crafted version is sealed shut on both sides, containing every word of the novel yet remaining completely unreadable. The concept serves as a symbolic protest against the growing wave of global book bans and censorship, using design to make the invisible visible.

While this edition cannot be opened, it draws attention to how "countless books worldwide are becoming figuratively unreadable through suppression and removal." Copies have been shared with authors including Stephen King, Nobel laureate Herta Müller, and Jila Mossaed of the Swedish Academy, all voicing support for the project.

The initiative launches The Bound Books Project, inviting over 1,000 libraries and bookstores across Sweden to foster discussion on censorship and the freedom to read.
