AI-assisted academic research is expanding access to advanced tools that can support scientists across multiple stages of the research process. OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program plans to provide free access to frontier models for up to 100,000 scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Researchers can use ChatGPT and Codex for tasks including developing hypotheses, reviewing literature, writing code, analyzing data, preparing grants and communicating findings. The program also includes research-focused skills, connectors and training to support more specialized workflows.
The initiative demonstrates how AI platforms can evolve from general-purpose assistants into specialized infrastructure for professional research. For technology companies, universities and research organizations, these tools could improve productivity, accelerate complex workflows and lower barriers to advanced computational capabilities.
